April 2nd - Weekly Round Up from Mexico

It was a great weekend of football in Mexico, starting on Friday evening with Necaxa taking on Chivas.

Xavier Baez scored impressively showing great determination to run on to a loose ball and slot past Perez in the Necaxa goal to give Chivas an early 1-0 lead.

Christian Suarez had the final say of the game heading painfully into his own net towards the end, sealing a 2-1 victory for Chivas.

This leaves Necaxa bottom of Group 1 after a Mini-Resurgence.  Chivas sit in 3rd and continue to push forward.

Pumas continue to lead Group 3 even after defeat to Chiapas.   A massive win for Chiapas who still remain bottom of Group 3 but this wil lcertainly bring a much needed lift to the squad.  A brace from Antonio Salazar and a third from Edgar Andrade with a low free kick.

A late goal from Espinoza for Pumas was too little to late as the result was sealed for Chiapas.

Diego Cocca will breath a sigh of relief as he sealed his first win for Santos after 5 matches without a win.  What also could be a big win and turning point for Santos after beating high flying Cruz Azul 3-0, their first defeat in 6.

In the first of 2 thrilling games this weekend, Queretaro came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against San Luis.  Queretaro showed discipline and determination to push on after falling behind early on, and a brace from Uruguayan Carlos Bueno, one being an 88th minute winner sent the home crowd into ecstasy.

Tough defeat for San Luis to take as Group 2 becomes even tighter.

Tigres got back to winning ways after 3 draws on the bounce with a 2-0 home win against 10-man Atlante, falling 3 points behind Group 2 leaders America, having played a game less.  Tigres strong campaign continues.

Tigres remain top of Group 1 on 23 points and only behind Pumas in the General Standings.

Atlas and Tecos played out a 1-1 draw, while Pachuca sealed a shock win away at Morelia.

Toluca and Monterrey also finished 1-1 after an early Aldo De Nigris goal was canceled out by Javier Ayoví in the 74th minute.

The game of the week is without a doubt America's home clash with Puebla in Mexico City.  A first half hat trick for Angel Reyna set America on there way to a 4-0 lead after 33 minutes and Pueblas season long struggle seemed to be continuing.

Vicente Sanchez also had a brace on the day after Reyna opened the scoring with a delightful chip in the 13th minute.  When Reyna added his third an Club America's 4th after 33 minutes the game was over... Or so we thought.

And the part of the beautiful game we all love (especially when its not our team!) started to kick in, that beautiful feeling of momentum, when you get 1 and think well if we get 2, we've got a chance..  And that's exactly the determination Puebla showed.

Goals from Félix Borja  (42')  just before half time sent the teams in with a little to think about then when goals from Roberto Juárez  (57')  and Alejandro Acosta  (68')  came, the pressure started to pile on Club America.

I watched in amazement and thought, surely not??  Vicente Sánchez (71') then put a bit of a cushion between the two teams after a great solo effort, skipping 2 tackles and driving the ball home.

Gabriel Pereyra  (74')  did get a 4th for Puebla but seemingly a 5th was too much to ask..You could feel for Puebla a bit as a neutral after scoring 4 away goals at the Azteca yet coming away with nothing... The sometimes harsh reality of football.
