Your fired! - Managing in the Premiership vs. Continental Europe.
Paul Ince has just been sacked. And there has been some very unjust sackings, sure this season in England alone.
And of course in recent times this has been a growing trend of the American Idol - Pop Idol generation.. If it isn't working vote them off!
Well hopefully you see the point. But this raised some other questions in my mind. Only a very small handful of managers in the English football league have been at their clubs for a pre longed period of times. This makes them the exception, not the rule.
Constantly fans want their manager out. A few bad results and off with his head! Well I took a look around Europe and was curious to see whether this trend persisted over seas also. Apparently not, the manage rof the team usually only has an average shelf life of 2 seasons at most continental clubs.
Again there are exceptions, Pep Guardiola for example. But the majority of clubs in Europe, big and small have a rotating door of managers coming in and out. This seems pretty standard practice and no fuss is really made of it.
With a Director Of Football in place responsible for the majority of recruiting, the manager is quite simply the man who picks the team and man-manages the players. Not to completely discredit the art of management, but simply pointing out that the Continental European view is the manager is in for a short term job and can and will be replaced without to much complaint.
In the UK and England specifically there is a constant moan for managers to be given time and the opportunity to build their team. Maybe this is because Ferguson at Man Utd has done this so effectively, but again he is the exception to the rule, not the rule.
So quite clearly there are 2 ways to deal with the manager, with even the great Jose Mourinho usually only spending 2 seasons with a club perhaps the more modern game will be represented by managers just staying for the short term, even in England.
